From 1987 to 1994, Star Trek: The Next Generation built on the spirit of the original series, adapting its themes to modern times. To this day, Canadian fans of the Star Trek universe remain passionate about the series, which featured extraordinary characters and captivating episodes. Among them, The Best of Both Worlds, featuring some of the most memorable antagonists of all time: the Borg.

This fearsome race is one of the greatest threats to the Federation. Relentless in their quest for perfection, the Borg are absolutely determined to assimilate worlds, technologies and living beings - including, briefly, Captain Jean-Luc Picard.

"We are the Borg. You will be assimilated."
The Borg made their first appearance in 1989, in the episode Doctor Q. In that episode, Doctor Q put Captain Picard to the test by "facilitating" initial contact with the Borg in the unexplored Delta Quadrant. But the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise soon realize that this species is unlike anything they've encountered before: these cybernetic beings adapt almost instantly to any kind of armed attack; their ominous cube-shaped ship repairs itself; and they're determined to assimilate new technologies to perfect the Collective (and, they believe, the beings they assimilate).

The Borg's hive mind represents the threat posed by conformity, illustrating the importance of diversity and individuality, an underlying theme throughout the Star TrekTM universe. While the appearance of a single cube ship often means immediate devastation, Captain Picard manages to free himself from the assimilation of the Borg, who had transformed him into a being named Locutus. This adventure, however, will have long-term repercussions, both for the character and for the Star TrekTM universe as a whole.

Did you know?

In the seventh season's Promotions episode, Ensign Sam Lavelle tries to ingratiate himself with Commander Riker, but mistakenly believes him to be Canadian (Riker explains that he's actually from Alaska).
The series spawned a number of memorable characters and species, including the Borg, Ferengi and Cardassian.
After their introduction in the Doctor Q episode of the second season, the Borg made five more appearances in Star TrekTM: The Next Generation.
After his assimilation by the Borg, Captain Picard adopts the name Locutus. This name suits his role as a go-between, since it's derived from the Latin word meaning "to express by speech".
Although we know that the Borg are made up of members of thousands of different species, their origin has never been fully explained. In Doctor Q, Guinan explains that they are both organic and mechanical, and have been constantly evolving for thousands of centuries.
Many fans maintain that the Borg's most memorable appearance was in the award-winning Best of Both Worlds, the final episode of the third season. This is undoubtedly one of the most popular episodes of the series, with its catchphrase featuring a disturbing image: Captain Picard, assimilated by the Borg.
