Majestic, powerful and hauntingly silent in flight, the snowy owl (Bubo scandiacus) embodies the enigmatic nature of the Canadian Arctic. It's one of the largest owls, and contrary to popular belief, it sees both day and night, a particularly important ability given that it must hunt under the Arctic midnight sun in summer.Admittedly, the Snowy Owl's dazzling white plumage is perhaps what immediately catches the eye. Yet this bird of prey's eyes are among its most distinctive features. Surprisingly, these bright yellow, cat-like eyes are similar in weight and size to human eyes. The Snowy Owl's eyes look straight ahead, not to the side like those of other birds, giving it heightened depth perception. Because its eyes don't move freely in their sockets, the snowy owl has a mobile neck that allows it to turn its head 270 degrees to the right and left, a remarkable ability illustrated on the coin.
Did you know?
The snowy owl is an essential link in the Arctic tundra ecosystem. Throughout Canada, it is protected and cannot be hunted.
In 1987, it was designated the official bird of Quebec.
The snowy owl prefers the wide open spaces of its vast range.
This species breeds in the Arctic region and winters in southern Canada, the northern United States and Russia. Some birds spend the whole year in the Arctic, while others migrate intermittently.
In spring, the snowy owl hops from one patch of snow to another as the snow melts in its wintering area. Some experts believe this to be a camouflage technique.
Packaging
The coin is encapsulated and presented in a burgundy double-shell case adorned with the Royal Canadian Mint logo and an illustrated protective box.
Interesting fact
The Snowy Owl coin features a unique reverse design that showcases a majestic Snowy Owl in flight, with its wings spread wide and its feathers intricately detailed. The coin's obverse features a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, adding a touch of regality to the overall design.
