Comment
Our 2020 Remembrance Day tribute takes the form of a real poppy, recalling the inspiration of the war poem In Flanders Fields. This piece represents the most realistic flower we've ever created in 99.99% pure silver. Its reverse is carefully sculpted to capture many of the poppy's botanical features, from the outward-curving petals to the central whorl. An antique finish also enhances every wrinkle, curve and fold. This flower represents a nation's gratitude to those who fought, those who perished, those who continue to serve their homeland, and all the loved ones who have supported them over the years. The flower that inspired a war poem. Special features
THE SHAPE OF A REAL POPPY. In 2019, we launched the world's first coin with an outline imitating the shape of this flower. In 2020, our annual commemorative tradition reaches new heights with a hollow coin that rounds inward to take the shape of a real three-dimensional poppy.
THE APPEARANCE OF A REAL POPPY. The petals that give the piece its shape have been carefully sculpted to reproduce the curvature and crepe-like texture of a real poppy.
AN ANTIQUE FINISH. The piece's antique finish accentuates every fold and curve to enhance the realism of the petals.
ART REFLECTING NATURE. This coin represents the most realistic, natural-looking flower we've ever minted in 99.99% pure silver.
BOTANICAL FEATURES. To capture the true appearance of the poppy, the engraving on the reverse even reproduces the stigma, which forms a ray pattern in the very hollow of the flower.
A REMEMBRANCE DAY TRADITION. By reproducing the flower that inspired the poem In Flanders Fields, we pay tribute to all those who served our country, and all those who continue to do so to this day, in the name of freedom and, above all, peace. Their sacrifices will be remembered by Canadians for generations to come, as symbolized by this poppy-shaped coin.
Did you know that?
The poppy has been Canada's Flower of Remembrance since 1921.
During the First World War, bombing raids ploughed the soil of Flanders, creating favorable conditions for Papaver rhoeas to appear on the battlefields. This flowering was described in 1915 by John McCrae of Guelph, Ontario, in his poem In Flanders Fields, which later inspired the international campaign to make the poppy a symbol of remembrance.
Packaging
The coin is encapsulated and presented in a double-shell case featuring the Royal Canadian Mint logo. The case comes with a black protective box.
Interesting fact
One interesting fact about the 2020 Canadian $20 Silver Elizabeth II (Remembrance Day) coin is that it features a selective rose gold plating on the reversal side, which adds a touch of elegance and symbolism to the coin's design. The rose gold plating is applied only to the poppy and the lettering "Remembrance" and "Le Souvenir," creating a striking contrast with the silver background. This unique feature adds to the coin's collectibility and serves as a fitting tribute to the men and women who have served their country.
