About the Order of Military MeritFounded on July 1, 1972 by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the Order of Military Merit comprises three grades, generally conferred according to the recipient's degree of responsibility. The rank of Member (M.M.M.) is usually awarded to non-commissioned officers (NCOs) and junior officers in recognition of "outstanding service or exceptional performance of duty". The rank of Officer (O.M.M.) is normally awarded to senior officers, with titles ranging from Lieutenant-Commander or Major to Captain (Capv) or Colonel, for "outstanding meritorious service in the performance of duties involving responsibility". The highest rank, Commandeur (C.M.M.), is reserved for general officers who have distinguished themselves through "exceptional meritorious service in duties of high responsibility".
Did you know that?
To compensate for the long absence of a purely Canadian honour for military merit, the Order's constitution was amended in its first year to double the annual quota.
Appointments are generally made in September and October of each year, once nominations have been received through the chain of command. The Order's Advisory Council first draws up a list of recommended candidates, which the Chief of the Defence Staff then submits to the Governor General, Chancellor of the Order.
The annual number of nominations must not exceed 0.1% of all Canadian Forces members, including those in the Reserves.
Each year, only 6% of recipients are eligible for the rank of Commander, and 30% for that of Officer; all others receive the title of Member.
The badge's four-pointed cross adorns many other honours and decorations around the world, including the Royal Red Cross, which was awarded to Canadian nursing sisters until the end of the Korean War.
The first designs proposed for the Order's insignia featured the uncrowned effigy of Her Majesty the Queen; it was eventually decided to follow the Order of Canada model to ensure uniformity among Canadian honours.
Each medal has a number on the reverse to identify the recipient, whose name is published in the Canada Gazette.
