Your coin presents a faithful recreation of the Companion of the Order of Canada insignia, in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of one of Canada's highest honours. Designed in 1966 by Bruce W. Beatty, C.M., S.O.M., C.D., the insignia of the Order of Canada is shaped in a stylized, hexagonal snowflake that is a fitting symbol for Canada's northern climate; it is also strongly symbolic, since every snowflake is as unique as each recipient's contribution to their country. Here, the coin's reverse recreates the six symmetrical points that lead to an annulus at the centre, where a red-coloured maple leaf indicates the Companion rank. The Order's motto, DESIDERANTES MELIOREM PATRIAM ("They desire a better country"), is circumscribed around Canada's beloved national symbol, which is surmounted by the Royal Crown. Like the prestigious insignia itself, the coin is struck in fine silver; the application of colour on this numismatic piece also mimics the complex and colourful enamelling of the iconic insignia that symbolizes Canada at its best

Did you know that?
Her Majesty The Queen is the Sovereign of the Order, and the Governor General is its Chancellor and Principal Companion. The Governor General presents the insignia of the Order to new members at investiture ceremonies held three or four times a year.
In 1867, Canada's first Governor General, Viscount Monck, launched the idea of a Canadian honours system, proposing a group of knights known as the Order of St. Lawrence.
The first appointment to the Order of Canada, that of a Companion, took place on July 1, 1967, the exact day of the centenary of Confederation.
Any Canadian may nominate a person for the Order, but never posthumously. Nominations are reviewed by the Chancellery of Honours, which reports to the Office of the Secretary to the Governor General, and then presented to the Order's Advisory Council, which recommends appointments to the Governor General.
While the annual number of appointments is limited, the number of Members and Officers of the Order is not. However, at no time may the Order exceed 165 Companions.
The design of the insignia represents a stylized hexagonal snowflake, evocative of Canada's northern climate; it is also an eloquent symbol, since each snowflake is unique, reflecting the contribution each recipient has made to our country.
Since 1967, more than 6,000 people from all sectors of society have been recognized for their outstanding contributions, which have made Canada a country of dedication, innovation and excellence. These distinguished citizens have received one of the country's most prestigious honours, the Order of Canada, which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year.
With this distinction, members are entitled to wear an exclusive insignia corresponding to their rank; that of Companion is reproduced on the design of this coin. This prestigious emblem represents Canada at its best, rewarding outstanding achievement, dedication and merit, as reflected in the Order's motto: Desiderantes meliorem patriam ("They desire a better country").
