Comment
Founded by a small group of French settlers in 1713, Louisbourg soon flourished thanks to its immense natural harbor. The town was the seat of French supremacy in the Atlantic region, and boasted a bustling economic and cultural hub, housing one of the largest garrisons in New France, a major fishing port, and merchant ships from the four corners of the globe. After being captured in 1758, the British abandoned it in 1768. Today, Louisbourg is a National Historic Site recognized as the port that played a key role in the founding of a country that would become Canada.2013 marks the 300th anniversary of the founding of this French colony.
