The commemorative coin is dedicated to the 100th anniversary of birth of Oleh Olzhych (Oleh Oleksandrovych Kandyba) – a poet, public figure and archeologist. During the World War II he headed a patriotic anti-fascist underground resistance group and was one of the organizers of the Ukrainian National Council in Kyiv (1941). In 1944, arrested by Gestapo men, he perished in a fascist concentration camp.Interesting fact
The 2 Hryvni (Oleh Olzhych) 2007 coin from Ukraine features an image of Oleh Olzhych, a Ukrainian poet and writer, on its obverse side. The reverse side of the coin depicts a scene from Olzhych's poem "The Wind of the Century," which is a symbol of Ukrainian national revival. The coin's design was created by Ukrainian artist Ivan Prymachenko.
