This coin celebrates the 150th anniversary of the birth of Ivan Piddubnyi, a renowned athlete who won six Greco-Roman wrestling World Cups. The “champion of the champions” or the “king of the champions” – as the European media of his day called him – won world renown for his Herculean strength, courage, agility and willpower. Over the 40 years of his career, Piddubnyi did not lose a single championship, losing only some individual fight matches. Piddubnyi, who was of Cossack stock, rose to fame as a legendary athlete, while his name became the symbol of his people’s indomitable spirit.
