The coin is dedicated to 160th anniversary of Illia Mechnikov (1845 – 1916), an outstanding, world-famous scientist and the Nobel Prize winner (1908). Mechnikov is one of the founders of evolution embryology, immunology and microbiology, who had discovered the phagocytosis phenomenon, had developed the phagocytic theory of immunity (1883).
