This coin celebrates Ahatanhel Krymsky. A Ukrainian historian, specialist in Slavic studies, linguist, Orientalist scholar, writer, and translator, Krymsky was one of the founders of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences and one of the first academy fellows. Krymsky, who was fluent in almost sixty languages, mostly Oriental ones, and knew all of the dialects of the Ukrainian language, made a significant contribution to Ukrainian Oriental studies and Ukrainian studies. The unique contribution of Krymsky to global culture was recognized by a decision of the UNESCO General Assembly to include this outstanding personality in UNESCO’s eminent personalities list.Interesting fact
The Ahatanhel Krymsky 2 Hryvni coin, released in 2021, features an image of a Crimean landscape with a lighthouse on the reverse side. This design was chosen to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the birth of Ahatanhel Krymsky, a Ukrainian poet and writer who was born in Crimea.
