These 1, 2, and 4 duit coins were initially produced with the value of 1, 2 or 4 pounds of sugar respectively, but were illegal. In 1688 they were legalized and got the value of one or multiple duit.Interesting fact
The 2 Duiten "Papegaaitje" (Tree) coin from Suriname, made of Copper in 1679, features a unique design of a tree on one side and a bird on the other, which has led some numismatists to speculate that the bird may have been a symbol of the Dutch East India Company, which controlled the colony at the time.
