Nowadays Bolivia has no seashores. This is the first time Bolivia issues commemorative circulating coins.

Eduardo Abaroa Hidalgo was born at San Pedro de Atacama, a location that at the moment was part of Bolivia. During the Pacific War, with Chile, he joined the Bolivian Army, durin Chilean invasion, he led the civilian resistance in Topáter battle, where he lost his life, defending a bridge.

Abaroa is considered one of the main hero of the Pacific War, and was awarded the grade of colonel after death.
