Bolivia issued a set of 4 coins, towards the territorial claims to Chile, for the region they took from Bolivia; out of the territorial question, the importance for Bolivia is that region was their access to sea. Nowadays Bolivia has no seashores. This is the first time Bolivia issues commemorative circulating coins.Genoveva Rios was a 14 years old girl, when Chilean forces invaded Antofagasta, that at the moment was part of Bolivia.
Her father had a high position in the police of the city, and when she saw the Chilean forces were seizing flags and arms of Bolivia, she took the flag in the police building and hid it in her clothes, saving it; later she gave it to her parents.
Genoveva is considered a national hero for risking her life to save the flag.
The image on the coin is copied from a didactic drawing of Abel Beltrán Saavedra that is one of the most popular images of the girl.
