First piece in a new series, also sold as a subscription to a three-piece series. In flight, the whooping crane (Grus americana) is gracefully elegant. It lets itself be carried by the wind, its large wings spread wide. Yet its beauty is most fragile: in 1941, in the whole of North America, there were just 16 migrating whooping cranes in the wild. Fortunately, a conservation movement has been launched to protect these majestic birds, one of which is forever immortalized on this remarkable piece.
Habitat protection, population monitoring and breeding programs have been essential in preventing the complete extinction of North America's largest bird. It's true that progress still needs to be made before the whooping crane is no longer considered an endangered species. But these efforts are an important chapter in a conservation movement essential to preserving Canada's rich biodiversity, our natural heritage.
Did you know that?
- The whooping crane's call is similar to the sound of a single-note bugle; it can be heard for miles around during mating season, or when the bird becomes frightened and aggressive.
- Whooping cranes often fly continuously for up to 10 hours. They let themselves be carried along by the rising, swirling currents, covering considerable distances in a single flight.
- Whooping cranes usually lay two eggs, which they incubate for around 30 days. Both parents take turns keeping the nest warm.
- Many whooping cranes have lived 40 years in captivity and mated for life! It can take up to two years to weave their relationship, but once established, the fidelity of these winged couples is rarely called into question.
