The wilds of western North and South America are home to the cougar, the fourth largest felid. The Puma concolor - a stealthy animal that can be seen in remote regions from southern Canada to Patagonia - occupies the largest range of any large Western mammal. This large, leopard-sized fawn can be found wherever its prey is abundant, from the Pacific coast to the Rockies, and from the desert to the boreal forest.Unlike some of its rivals, such as the wolf and the bear, the cougar relies on its vision, rather than its sense of smell and hearing. Although considered color-blind, the cougar has excellent night vision.
Mainly known as the "cougar" in Canada, the "mountain lion" in the United States and the "puma" in South America, this animal is referred to by some forty common names.
Despite the cougar's population decline over the last century, studies show that today the animal has repopulated certain regions of its range in central Canada, and that its population is growing in the west. There are still many questions about the cougar's presence in the wild in Eastern Canada.
Packaging
The coin is encapsulated and presented in a wooden case featuring the Royal Canadian Mint logo. The case comes with a standard protective box.
