Comment

Krause lists silver strikes of the Gold 1 and 2 ducat coins in the series. This coin is an unlisted silver strike of the 12 ducat coin.

Zöttl presents this coin in a commemorative series (5 Kreuzer - 12 Ducat), for the 1200th anniversary of the convent. In the 18th century it was believed that Saint Rupert founded Juvavum (Salzburg) around AD 543. Contemporary theories however point to the foundation of Salzburg in AD 696.
Alternatively, the reverse legend "IUB XII" may refer to 12 jubilees (jubileum, 50 year periods). This points to the 600th anniversary of the consecration of the Benedictine abbey to St Peter in 1147.

Interesting fact

One interesting fact about the Pattern 12 Ducat - Hiéronymus von Colloredo (Pattern) 1782 from Bishopric of Salzburg (Austrian States) made of Silver weighing 24.29 g is that it features a unique design, showcasing the coat of arms of Hiéronymus von Colloredo, the Prince-Archbishop of Salzburg, on the obverse side, while the reverse side features the image of the Salzburg Cathedral. This coin is considered a rare and valuable collector's item among numismatists, with only a few specimens known to exist.
