First Uruguayan coin colorized on both sides. This coin honors Murga, a popular musical and theater form. Main part of the Uruguayan Carnival, which is the longest on the world, Carnival at Uruguay starts last days of January , and ends on first days of March, every year.
Murga groups are composed of 15 to 20 singers , and a "bateria" formed by 3 percussionists playing bass drum , cymbals and snare, but on last years usually are added guitar and sometimes other instruments, for certain parts of the play.
Main parts are opening and exit songs, at start and end of performance. In the middle, usually one or two stages, containing songs with music copied from newer or known songs, and lyrics changed, with diverse contents, many of them about political and social themes, mostly treated on a humorist and satirical style, while opening and exit are a bit more formal, but usually contains some humoristic elements too.
This genre is common at Uruguay and Argentina, with several differences, and is considered generated after "chirigota" of Cadiz, Spain, but now have evolved different.
Total performance lasts about 45 minutes.
Every year at Montevideo is organized a Carnival contest, by city government, where they compete in different categories Murga (the main one, Candombe (a coin related was issued at end of 2019), and other categories Humorists (focused on humor and jokes), Parodists (they make 2 parodies about important figures or events) and Magazine (focused on dance, songs and musical show).
