Date of issue: 25 APR 2001In 1648 the Russian explorer S. I. Deshnyov together with the navigator F.A. Popov (Fedot Alexeyev) doubled the Chukotka Peninsula, discovered a strait between Asia and America.
Interesting fact
One interesting fact about this coin is that it was issued to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the first Russian expedition to reach the Pacific Ocean, led by F. Popov and S. Deshnyov in 1641. The coin's design features an image of the expedition's ship, the "Baikal," and the obverse side bears the inscription "F. Popov and S. Deshnyov's Expedition" in Russian.
