The Banco de la Republica Oriental del Uruguay, also known as Banco Republica, or BROU, is the main financial institution of the country, was founded on 1896, issuing coins and banknotes until 1967, when this function was transferred to Banco Central del Uruguay.From that date, BROU works as a regular bank; it is the property of the country, and works actively on promotion and financiation of private and public enterprises.
Banco Central is in charge of issuing coins and banknotes, and also of the economical politics of the country.

Interesting fact
One interesting fact about this coin is that it features the image of a "Caballo Criollo" (a breed of horse native to Uruguay) on its obverse side, which is unusual for a coin denominated in pesos, as most coins of this denomination feature the image of a historical figure or a national symbol.
