Comment

Edward III introduced one of the Tower’s longest lasting traditions, the Ceremony of the Keys, which is carried out every night to this day. The Chief Yeoman Warder performs the ritual of locking the Tower for the night, carrying a lantern and The Queen’s Keys.

The fourth and final coin in the 2019 Tower of London series, produced in association with Historic Royal Palaces. The design features the Tower of London mint mark on the reverse and was also struck in copper-nickel, silver proof, silver piedfort and gold proof. Issue limit: 585.

Interesting fact

One interesting fact about the coin is that the Ceremony of the Keys, which is depicted on the coin's reverse, is a centuries-old tradition that takes place annually at the Tower of London. During the ceremony, the Yeoman Warders (also known as Beefeaters) hand over the keys to the Tower to the Lord Mayor of London, symbolizing the transfer of responsibility for the security of the Tower. This tradition has been taking place since at least the 14th century, making it one of the longest-running ceremonies in British history.
