The image shows the view from behind of the 3 Columbus Vessels when reaching America for the first time; ¡Tierra, Tierra! were the the words of Rodrigo de Triana, first European man to see America land, a island named Guanahani, which exact location is still is under discussion.
In the image Triana is shown waving on top of the closest vessel ("La Pinta"), while announcing the sight of land.

VARIANTS:
There are two obverse variants: the older style, where the coat of arms has plain strips on left side, and the wreath is thin; and the newer one where the strips are reeded and the wreath is thick.
