VARIANTS: This coin was minted with 2 different obverses: KM# 242.1, the older one, has coat of arms smaller, wreath thinner and stripes on left are all plain; KM# 242.2, the most recent, with coats of arms bigger, wreath thick and 3 reeded stripes on left.

The reverse design is very elaborated, with several symbols, showing José Martí, main leader of the Independence war, on 2nd. halfo of 19th. century, and Fidel Castro, leader of the revolution against Batista.

The flying dove on center symbolizes freedom and peace. and shape of south shore reminds the places where revolutionaries reached the island.
