Comment
In 1982, eleven years after Decimalisation Day on 15th February 1971, the word NEW was removed from the denomination on the reverse, so the legend now reads TEN PENCE.From 1982 to 1991, no ten pence coins were struck for circulation since the pre-decimal florins, with a value of 10p, were still circulating as part of the decimalisation process.
Consequently, this type can only be found in Royal Mint annual Brilliant Uncirculated and Proof sets.
Florins, along with this larger 10p type, were demonetised in 1993 after the introduction of the smaller 10p piece.
Interesting fact
One interesting fact about this coin is that it features a unique reverse design, depicting a crowned shield with the St. Edward's Crown on top, surrounded by a wreath of oak leaves. This design was specifically created for the 10 pence coin and is not found on any other coins in the series.
