The 10 Mark coin featuring Johann Gottfried Schadow was part of a series of coins issued by the German Democratic Republic (GDR) in 1989 to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the birth of prominent German artists, writers, and musicians. The coin was designed by artist Wolfgang E. Scholz and features an image of Schadow, a renowned German sculptor, on the obverse (front side), along with his name and the year of his birth and death. The reverse (back side) of the coin features an image of Schadow's famous sculpture "Die Schöne Helena" (The Beautiful Helen), which is located in the Alte Nationalgalerie in Berlin.
