Comment

Silvesterchlausen is a winter tradition in Herisau and other rural districts of Appenzell Ausserrhoden observed on 31 December since time immemorial. Two communes, Urnäsch and Waldstatt, observe the Silvesterchläuse on New Year’s Eve in accordance with the Julian calendar, on 13 January. Individuals ("Chläuse") in elaborate costumes get together in groups known as "Schuppeln", to ring their cow bells in harmony, creating an impressive effect.

Interesting fact

One interesting fact about the Pattern 10 Francs (Silvesterchlausen; trial) 2013 from Switzerland is that it features a unique reversible design, meaning the coin has two distinct sides that can be considered the front or back of the coin, depending on how it is oriented. This feature was implemented as a way to symbolize the duality of the Swiss culture, which is known for its blend of German, French, and Italian influences.
