Silvesterchlausen is a winter tradition in Herisau and other rural districts of Appenzell Ausserrhoden observed on 31 December since time immemorial. Two communes, Urnäsch and Waldstatt, observe the Silvesterchläuse on New Year’s Eve in accordance with the Julian calendar, on 13 January. Individuals ("Chläuse") in elaborate costumes get together in groups known as "Schuppeln", to ring their cow bells in harmony, creating an impressive effect.
