Comment
For centuries, flocks of Canada geese have heralded the changing of the seasons. So ingrained is this image in the minds of Canadians that artist Alex Colville proposed illustrating the goose and its "serene dynamism" on the 1967 centennial dollar design.Colville's design highlights the bird's powerful, streamlined silhouette, which enables it to cover great distances in the air. Geese travel in "V" formations, creating air currents that carry them along. In this way, they can save energy and cover up to 1,000 km in a single day!
Geese nest throughout Canada and follow a variety of southward migration routes, the longest of which originates in the northern tundra and ends up in the southern United States and Mexico! As a result of climate change, more geese are wintering in Canada, and some have begun to nest in West Greenland. The Canada goose was introduced to Great Britain in the 17th century, then brought to the continent as a game bird. Its evolution in Europe should continue, as its population continues to grow.
