Step into the past - our past - with a 99.99% pure gold coin that pays tribute to the British sovereign of 1919. A piece of history, it was the last gold sovereign to be minted at our Ottawa plant. With the exception of the modified vintage "1919-2019", the reverse design is virtually identical to the original, even featuring the old-fashioned mintmark, a "C" for "Canada".- A SLIGHTLY REDUCED CANVAS! The coin is 20 mm in diameter, whereas the original was 22.05 mm.

Did you know?
The gold sovereign is closely linked to the creation of the Canadian mint. It all began with the Klondike Gold Rush of 1896, which renewed interest in creating an establishment that could profitably convert the metal extracted from our mines into coins. Fearing that there would be little demand for Canadian coins, and an inactive mint, it was proposed that the British Sovereign, a gold coin widely accepted as a form of payment, also be minted. For this to happen, the mint had to be administered by the Royal Mint. And so, on January 2, 1908, the Royal Mint's Ottawa branch officially opened its doors.
This led to the construction of the refinery, which today produces some of the purest gold coins in the world. The original plan for the Ottawa plant did not call for the construction of such a facility, as it was believed that gold could be sourced from private refiners. However, no local company was capable of refining the metal to the exacting standards required for coin manufacturing, hence the addition in 1911.
Sovereign was mainly used to export funds and redeem banknotes. Canada produced a modest quantity between 1908 and 1919 (but none in 1912 and 1915), its highest annual total being 256,946 in 1911.
Packaging
The coin is encapsulated and presented in a double-shell case featuring the Royal Canadian Mint logo. The case comes with a black protective box.
Interesting fact
One interesting fact about the 10 Dollars - Elizabeth II (1919 Sovereign) 2019 coin from Canada is that it features a unique reverse design that commemorates the 100th anniversary of the 1919 Sovereign, which was a gold coin minted by the Royal Canadian Mint in 1919. The reverse of the 2019 coin features a stylized image of the 1919 Sovereign, surrounded by a wreath of maple leaves, with the words "CENTENNIAL OF THE 1919 SOVEREIGN" inscribed above the image. This design is a nod to the rich history of the Royal Canadian Mint and its legacy of producing high-quality gold coins.
