In conjunction with the issue of the 1980 $10 Communication Satellite uncirculated pure-nickel coin on the 06Feb1980 and the subsequent issue of a pure-nickel proof version on the 22Dec1980, the Board of Commissioners of Currency, Singapore (BCCS) authorised the release of a beautiful 7-coin proof set on the 17Nov1980, featuring a silver proof version of this coin. Mintage of this set was limited to 14,000, with an issue price of S$120.00. The uncirculated nickel coin had a mintage of 120,000 and an issue price of S$10.50, while the proof nickel coin had a mintage of 15,000 and an issue price of S$30.00.
The 7-coin proof set was presented in a wooden clamshell case, with red velvet lining at the inside lower base and a white cushion lining at the inside top cover.
All seven coins were encapsulated in a rectangular acrylic case and presented within an outline of Singapore island. The serial number of each set is indicated on the obverse side of the coins.
Included with each set is a Certificate of Authenticity (CoA), which has the technical specifications on the back. A guarantee card by the BCCS is also included.
Interesting fact
One interesting fact about this coin is that it was minted to commemorate the launch of Singapore's first communication satellite, called "Satellite I," which was launched in 1978. The coin's design features an image of the satellite in orbit, surrounded by a stylized representation of the Earth's surface. The use of silver in the coin's composition adds to its collectibility and value, making it a unique and interesting piece for coin enthusiasts.
