Kenya was the last to become Republic in December 1964, meaning coins with and without a crown were minted in 1964. Coins without a crown were released in Uganda & Tanganyika for circulation with coins in Kenya having a crown.By 1964, all three countries of East Africa (Uganda, Tanzania (Tanganyika), and Kenya) had not only become independent but also became republics (where the president is the head of state).
