Comment
In 1903, coins were minted for both this type and KM# 53. They can be distinguished by the size of the digits in the date. This is the "small date" type, and the hole inside the '0' will be more squared off compared to the longer, oval shape in KM# 53.Schön# 12 includes both KM# 49 and KM# 53.
Interesting fact
The coin features a portrait of King Léopold II, who was the second king of Belgium and ruled from 1865 until his death in 1909. During his reign, Léopold II was known for his expansionist policies, particularly in the Congo Free State, where he exercised personal rule and was accused of perpetuating atrocities against the indigenous population. The coin's design, which features a small portrait of the king surrounded by an ornate frame, was created by the artist Charles-Auguste Fraikin and was used on several other coins during Léopold II's reign.
