The Crocodile of Tumbes (Crocodylus acutus) or "American crocodile" is the only species of crocodilian that inhabits the north coast of Peru, between the basins of the Tumbes and Zarumilla rivers. It can measure up to 6 meters long and weigh up to 500 kilos. It is key in the maintenance and structure of ecosystems where it inhabits since it helps to control the excessive increase of other species. East reptilian has had enormous importance for pre-Columbian cultures such as Chavin, who considered it the main object of worship along with the snake and the jaguar. It is a threatened species due to illegal hunting and the affectation of its habitat. In our legislation, it is considered a "Critically Endangered" species and included in Appendix I of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), which restricts its trade in the natural environment. Because of its ecotouristic value in its wild habitat and breeding grounds, it constitutes a resource of great potential for the generation of income for local populations.
