Comment

Piece intended solely for circulation in the Duchy, struck between 8 May and 24 December 1790 at the Günzburg mint.

Leopold II, Grand Duke of Tuscany succeeded Joseph II in 1790. There he found a duchy where the Belgian side was in full revolution and had just created the "United Belgian States". Leopold II reconquered the lost lands and prohibited the circulation of insurgent money. The mints of the Netherlands being no longer active and requiring funds to finance the Austrian army folded on Luxembourg, Leopold II ordered the mint in Günzburg to produce the necessary currency. A courier carrying a dispatch ordering the master Joseph Faby to produce the currency arrived there on May 8, 1790. Joseph Faby accepted and immediately began the process, a first shipment to Luxembourg was made on July 9th of the same year (Bernays & Vannerus, pp. 404-405 & Weiller, pp. 140-141).

Interesting fact

The 1 Sol - Leopold II 1790 coin from the Duchy of Luxembourg was made of copper, which was a common material for coins at that time. However, what makes this coin stand out is that it was issued during a time of great turmoil in Europe. The French Revolution had just begun, and many European countries were experiencing political and social upheaval. Despite this, the Duchy of Luxembourg was able to maintain its independence and continue minting its own coins, including this one. This coin is a testament to the resilience and stability of the Duchy during a time of great change and uncertainty.
