Comment
Upon independence in August 1947 the newly formed Republic of Pakistan sought to produce a distinctive new series of designs for the coinage of the country. Three separate pattern designs for the Rupee were proposed and produced under the instruction of Sinclair-Jones, the master of the mint in Lahore. The first two designs were never adopted, however the latter which this coin is struck from went onto be used for the currency Rupee struck for over a decade between 1948-1960.The third and final adopted design positioned the toughra centrally, surmounted by the legend GOVERNMENT OF PAKISTAN and wreath below. The reverse depicts again the crescent and star, with ONE Rupee below within a wreath and stars on both the left and right sides. The same design in Nickel was produced dated 1948 and 1949 for circulation.
Interesting fact
The Pattern 1 Rupee coin was designed by the renowned British artist and sculptor, Percy Metcalfe, who was also responsible for designing several other coins and currency for Pakistan during its early years. The coin features a portrait of Muhammad Ali Jinnah, the founder of Pakistan, on the obverse side, and a depiction of the national emblem of Pakistan on the reverse side. The coin was minted in 1947, the year Pakistan gained independence from British colonial rule, and was intended to be used as a regular circulating coin. However, due to various reasons, including a lack of resources and the political instability of the time, the coin was never released into circulation and remains a rare and highly sought-after collector's item among numismatists today.
