Comment
Upon independence in August 1947 the newly formed Republic of Pakistan sought to produce a distinctive new series of designs for the coinage of the country. Three separate pattern designs for the Rupee were proposed and produced under the instruction of Sinclair-Jones, the master of the mint in Lahore. The first two designs were never adopted, however the latter which this coin is struck from went onto be used for the currency Rupee struck for over a decade between 1948-1960.
The second design differed slightly. The obverse had the dates and legend GOVERNMENT OF PAKISTAN written in the outer circle and toughra within an inner circle. The reverse showed a crescent and star, value in Urdu above and in English below with smaller stars on both the left and right sides.
The passage of time has obscured the physical existence of the original coin specimens, relegating them to the annals of history. However, through meticulous research and information gleaned from diverse sources, including the NGC website, a digital representation of this coin has been faithfully recreated.
Interesting fact
The Pattern 1 Rupee coin from Pakistan was designed by the renowned British artist and designer, George Kruger Gray, who was also responsible for designing several other coins and banknotes for various countries. The coin features a portrait of Muhammad Ali Jinnah, the founder of Pakistan, on the obverse side, and a depiction of a cotton plant on the reverse side, which represents one of the major crops of Pakistan. The use of zinc (nickel alloy) in the production of this coin was a deliberate choice to make it more durable and resistant to corrosion, given the humid climate of the region.
