Markhor, a near-extinct species included in the Red Book of the International Union for the Protection of Nature and Natural Resources, is found in the mountains on the right bank of the Amudarya and Pyandzh and the Kugitangtau Mountains. In Tajikistan the remaining population of mountain goats is confined to a very small area.

Interesting fact

The 1993 Russian Markhor 1 Rouble coin is unique in that it features a rare example of a coin with a non-standard denomination. Most coins have denominations that are multiples of 10 or 100, but this coin has a denomination of 1 Rouble, which is not a standard denomination in the Russian currency system. This makes it a rare and interesting collector's item for numismatists.
