Comment

Due to inflation resulting from unchecked government spending and the exodus of silver and gold coinage from the country, the Guatemalan Government introduced cupronickel coinage into circulation.

Due to World War 1, these coins were exported to Europe and melted for their nickel content.

Interesting fact

The 1 Real coin from Guatemala, issued between 1900 and 1912, features a unique design on its reverse side. Instead of the usual national emblem or coat of arms, the coin bears an image of a Mayan ruin, specifically the Temple of the Inscriptions at the ancient city of Palenque. This design choice reflects Guatemala's rich cultural heritage and history, and sets the coin apart from others issued during the same period.
