The design was originally issued in 1988 with the 3rd portrait by Raphael David Maklouf. The 2008 strike was issued in a 14-piece set to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the £1 coin,© The Royal Mint, 2008
The 2013 strike was issued in a 3-coin set to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the £1 coin alongside the Royal Shield design by Eric Sewell and the Royal Shield design by Matthew Dent. The 2008 was also struck in silver proof with gold highlighting, while the 2013 was also struck in silver proof.
