Comment

Columbus discovered Cuba on his first trip to Americas, where he found several islands, First arrived to a island of the Bahamas, that was named by Columbus as "San Salvador" (Saint Saver, as it saved from a revolt of the sailors), and was known by natives as "Guanahani". This island keeps its Spanish name, in spite most of the other islands have English names.
On October 27th., 1492, by night, they reached Cuba, but stayed on board till next day, 28/10, that is the official date of Cuba's discovery. Columbus named Cuba as "Juana" after the Spanish monarchs' second daughter, in spite he thought was Japan (known as "Cipango" at that time). The name given by natives to the island was "Colba", that turned into Cuba after.
Finally Columbus understood it was not Cipango, and continued his trip, discovering later the island that named "La Española" (The Spanish), currently shared by Haiti and Dominican Republic.

Interesting fact

The 1990 Cuban Non-circulating coin 1 Peso (First Voyage of Columbus) made of Copper-nickel weighing 11.3 g has a unique design, featuring a portrait of Christopher Columbus on the obverse and a representation of the Santa Maria, one of the three ships that Columbus used on his first voyage, on the reverse.
