Diego Velázquez (1465-1524), born at Cuellar, Spain, was part of 2nd. Columbus voyage, and was 1st. governor of Cuba (as Lieutenant governor), till his death. Was founder of several cities at La Española island (currently shared by Haiti and Dominican Republic), and at Cuba, including Baracoa, Bayamo, Santiago de Cuba, Trinidad, Camagüey, Sancti Spiritu, Havana and Remedios. The house of Diego Velázquez still exists at Santiago de cuba, and currently is a museum, containing Velazquez's articles and others from the same times.Interesting fact
The 1991 Diego Velázquez 1 Peso coin from Cuba is unique in that it features a portrait of the Spanish conquistador Diego Velázquez, who played a significant role in the discovery and colonization of Cuba. This coin was issued as part of a series commemorating the 500th anniversary of the discovery of America.
