Alcala Gate is one of the main 5 gates that allowed entrance to formerly fortified Madrid city. Name comes from it was the one that accessed to the road towards near town Alcalá de Henares. Madrid had fortification walls from times of the Moors (9th. Century), and it was changed when Moors were expelled from Spain (10th, 11th Centuries), and had many modifications, being expanded while city grew. Finally got outdated on 16th.
