Comment
Some alignments are neither medal or coin as a few pose at a right angle or 90 degrees out.
These coins were minted to the specifications of the Latin Monetary Union. When the government of Honduras pegged its currency for 2:1 to the United States Dollar in 1918, these coins had a nominal face value of 50 cents despite containing 80-90 cents worth of silver. Additionally, due to the poor refining process, these coins contain traces of gold. Starting in 1919, these coins were melted for their gold content. By 1920, about 90% of these coins had been melted.
Interesting fact
One interesting fact about the 1881-1883 Honduran 1 Peso coin is that it was minted during a time of political instability in the country. Honduras had recently gained independence from Spain in 1821, but it was struggling to establish a stable government. The coin was minted during the presidency of Marco Aurelio Soto, who was instrumental in modernizing the country's economy and infrastructure. Despite the challenges of the time, the coin remains a valuable piece of Honduran history and a testament to the country's resilience.
