Between 1919 and 1921 a series of experiments were undertaken for a square coinage in nickel to replace the large bronze penny and halfpenny coins.
Interesting fact
One interesting fact about the 1920 Australian Kookaburra Pattern Penny is that it was designed by artist and sculptor Edgar Bertram Mackennal, who also designed the effigy of King George V that appears on the coin's obverse. Mackennal's design for the Kookaburra Pattern Penny features a kookaburra bird perched on a tree branch, surrounded by leaves and berries. The coin's reverse also includes the inscription "COMMONWEALTH OF AUSTRALIA" and the denomination "ONE PENNY." The coin was minted in 1920 at the Melbourne Mint and has a diameter of 24.5 mm.
