Between 1919 and 1921 a series of experiments were undertaken for a square coinage in nickel to replace the large bronze penny and halfpenny coins.
Interesting fact
The Kookaburra Pattern 1 Penny coin from Australia features a unique design of a kookaburra bird on the reverse side, which was created by artist Edgar Bertram Mackennal. The coin was minted in 1920 and is made of copper-nickel, weighing 3.81 grams. Interestingly, this coin was never officially released into circulation and was only produced as a pattern coin, making it a rare and valuable collector's item.
