Interesting fact
One interesting fact about the 1953 Elizabeth II Maundy Penny is that it was the first coin to feature the Queen's portrait on a Maundy coin. The tradition of minting Maundy coins dates back to the 13th century, and the coins were originally distributed to the poor on Maundy Thursday, the day before Good Friday. The 1953 coin was a special issue to commemorate the Queen's coronation, and it features a unique design that includes a crowned effigy of Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse (front) side, and a depiction of the royal coat of arms on the reverse (back) side.
