Comment

House of Windsor (1917 to date), Elizabeth II (1952-2022), Pre-decimal issues (1953-70).

The standard weight of these pieces was 48 to the pound or one third ounce avoirdupois (145.8 grains).

Due to the large number of pennies already circulating in 1953, these coins were not struck for circulation but were issued as part of the 9-coin Royal Mint set in a plastic envelope. It is thought that many of these sets were broken up with the coins ending up in circulation.

Also, a special proof set was released comprising 5s. to 1/4d. struck from polished dies and sold in special cases (40,000 issued).

Interesting fact

One interesting fact about this coin is that it features a rare portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, known as the "first portrait," which was only used on coins minted from 1953 to 1967. This portrait was designed by sculptor Mary Gillick and features a young Queen Elizabeth II with a crown and a wreath of laurel leaves. The coin's rarity and historical significance make it a valuable collector's item for numismatists.
