This crown-sized dollar coin was issued in 1989 as part of a four coin series to commemorate the 14th Commonwealth Games held in Auckland in 1990.The four coins were issued individually in small plastic pouches. (35,000 copies) (See links for other coins in the series)
A Sterling Silver Proof version of the coin was also issued (see link).
Interesting fact
The 1989 New Zealand $1 coin featuring Elizabeth II (3rd Portrait; Weightlifter) is unique in that it was designed with a special " Olympic weightlifting" theme to commemorate the Xth Commonwealth Games held in Auckland, New Zealand that year.
