This crown-sized dollar coin was issued in 1989 as part of a four coin series to commemorate the 14th Commonwealth Games held in Auckland in 1990.

The four coins were issued individually in small plastic pouches. (35,000 copies) (See links for other coins in the series)


This particular coin was also included in the Uncirculated Year set for 1989 (14,600 copies)

A Sterling Silver Proof version of the coin was also issued (see link).

Interesting fact

The 1989 New Zealand $1 coin featuring Elizabeth II (3rd Portrait; Runner) was designed by sculptor and coin designer, Raphael Maklouf. Maklouf's design was chosen as the winning entry in a competition held by the Reserve Bank of New Zealand, and it has since become a popular collector's item.
