Known as a "Philipsdaalder (Dutch) or Ecu Philippe (French).

With Philip's conquest of Portugal in 1581, a small shield of Portugal was added to his arms (just above center). This, along with the mint letter in the date boverse, differentiates this issue from previous ones.

Interesting fact

One interesting fact about this coin is that it was minted during a time of great turmoil in the region. The Dutch Revolt, which began in 1568, was still ongoing when this coin was minted in 1592. The revolt was a conflict between the Protestant Dutch and the Catholic Spanish, who were trying to maintain control over the region. Despite the conflict, the coin still bears the image of Philip II, the King of Spain, indicating the ongoing influence of Spanish rule in the region.
