Comment

These were definitely minted in New Haven, Connecticut. Some also speculate minting them in Rupert, Vermont, but this is not certain. All of the originals say “1787” but most speculate that these were indeed minted in 1788. In 2021 a team of numismatists re-examined the historical evidence about the Fugio cents in order to determine whether they should be considered a federal rather than a pre-federal coinage. On January 3rd 2022 the professional grading service PCGS published this research which concluded without any doubt that the Fugio cents were indeed a federal issue, and actually the first coinage of the new republic.

Interesting fact

The Fugio Cent, issued in 1787, was the first coin to be minted by the United States government. It was designed by John Reich and features a portrait of Liberty on one side and a wreath surrounding the words "Fugio" (Latin for "I flee") and "Cent" on the other. The coin was made of copper and weighed 10.2 grams. Interestingly, the Fugio Cent was not widely accepted by the public due to its low value and lack of familiarity with the design, leading to its eventual discontinuation. Despite this, it remains a highly sought-after collector's item among numismatists today.
